The Carrick Park Club held a very successful race day on Saturday afternoon with the running of the Page Transport Carrick Cup and the added attraction of the annual yearling sales.

A large crowd attended this event enjoying perfect weather conditions, plenty of good racing and some good money paid for some very promising looking yearlings.

Lot 11, a colt out of Mon Soie by Sportswriter, was the sale topper on the day going for a cool $36,000 to new owner Adrian Duggan.

Pyengana’s Mike LeFevre was the only breeder from the North-East with horses listed in the sale, presenting both a filly and a gelding for the season.

The long-time breeder is known for producing big well-built horses.

His gelding by, Down by the Seaside out of Caroline Claire fetched $18,000 for new owner Ben Yole and his filly by Sweet Loulou out of Motoring Rivers received $14,000.

“It’s always been a bit of a hobby that probably started from my father’s involvement in pacers,” he said.

“My brother Gary helps me handle them and get them ready; it's a passion project.”

Mr LeFevre said he will have one filly ready for next year’s sale, consistently producing one or two yearlings each year.

“I feel Tas Racing have really got on the front foot and are doing a good thing by helping breeders and buyers with incentives, it goes full circle and really encourages breeders to continue year in, year out.”

The annual sale grossed $162,000 at an average price of $20,250 which was up on the 2020 figure of $10,375.

The Kate MacLeod runner, Buster William was the only successful local at Carrick with a very good second in the $12000 Carrick Cup.

This race is a standing start and is run over a distance of 2650 metres.

The seven-year-old gelding was at the rear of the small field for a large part of the journey and after coming out three wide off the back straight he was still travelling well turning into the home straight.

He appeared to have the leader covered heading for home but the inside horse was able to kick on again and grab the win leaving Buster with another close second placing.
