Passionate Bridport local Georgia Burke has always gone above and beyond as a Provisional Psychologist for the West Tamar Youth Outreach Program.
And thanks to her passion behind the industry, she has now been nominated for a Tasmanian Young Achiever Award in the category ‘Create Change’.
Miss Burke began working in the role three years ago and is now the sole clinician for the program.
Her role includes visits to schools, community centres and people’s homes to provide support to young people and their families who are experiencing a range of mental health difficulties and life stressors.
Miss Burke believes that an environment of warmth, genuineness, non-judgement, honesty, trust (and at times humour), is the basis for growth and change.
“I aim to meet young people’s needs by walking alongside them, taking time to understand their struggles and clarify goals, and work with them to overcome barriers and build resilience and empowerment. It’s wonderful to see people experience a positive shift in their life,” she said.
Her targeted therapeutic intervention and family work links the relevant services and ongoing partnerships to various stakeholders, education, and community members for positive outcomes across the board.
She said it's always been a dream to be able to give back to a rural Tasmanian community.
“I feel humbled and honoured to be nominated for doing something that I love and feel very passionate about.
“It brings me so much fulfilment every day.
“The best part of my role is being able to connect with the young people I support, watch them overcome barriers and grow as individuals,” Miss Burke said.
Miss Burke was selected from hundreds of nominations across the state of young individuals under the age of 29.
Judging will commence on March 24 with the finalists and winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday May 14, 2021.
