Police believe an apparently deliberate ramming of a section of the fence around the Scottsdale recreation ground is related to a series of car thefts in the North-East.

About 9:30 pm on Tuesday February 17 a car was heard revving and a section of fence at the pedestrian access to the ground, off Charles Street, was found smashed down.

Sergeant Andrew Hanson said a Holden Commodore later found burnt out on the side of the Bridport Road was involved in the damage there as well as to some private fencing between Scottsdale and Bridport.

“This kind of thing usually relates to stolen cars, but in this case the car hasn’t been reported stolen.

“Police in Launceston saw the car earlier that evening acting suspiciously, but the driver evaded them and then apparently headed towards Scottsdale.

“It is most likely an old car that nobody wants or cares about anymore, and obviously hasn’t been registered into new owners’ names.

“I rarely believe in coincidence, and we don’t often see these sort of offences in the North-East in short time periods.

“It indicates to me that there is someone local causing trouble, and stealing cars as their means of transport.

“Or catching rides with an associate who does.”

Sergeant Hanson asked anyone with any idea who might be responsible to contact police to try to prevent it happening to anyone else.
