Trainer’s cross codes success

• North-East quinella Moonlite Bay beats Rockandahardplace to the line at Mowbray.

It was a big Sunday for Bridport-based pacing trainer Brooke Hammond.

Not only did she get one of her charges across the line first on the seven-event evening program at the Ladbrooke Racing Centre, Mowbray, but a thoroughbred she has a syndicate interest in Travelling Gigolo won earlier in the day at the Elwick race meeting.

The pacing started very promisingly for North-East interests with the Sunrise Bakery Pace resulting in a quinella for Moonlite Bay and Rockandahardplace.

The odds-on favourite Moonlite Bay trained by Hammond came out running at the start from barrier four to grab the lead.

The field then raced in single file with the  Kent Rattray-trained Rockandahardplace in fifth position on the fence.

With a lap to go the gelding pulled out one off the fence and made up ground to sit outside the leader’s wheel as they turned for home.

Moonlite Bay had the advantage of the leading role, resulting in a fearless contest between both horses up the home straight.

Moonlite Bay claimed first place and Rockandahardplace was a close second.
