Following the success of the inaugural Bridport Brave Winter Swim last year, the Bridport Surf Life Saving Club will again host the swim in 2021 as a Fringe Event of the Tassie Scallop Fiesta.

Participants will brave the icy waters at Gofton’s Beach as the sun rises (7.17am) on Sunday August 1, the morning of the Fiesta’s main event.

Event organiser, Ben Coxen said last year’s event was a great way to show the local community what the surf club has to offer in advance of the new season kicking off.

“We had a lot of new members last season, who came along to the winter swim and discovered what a great facility we have here.

“It sparked a renewed interest in the beach and surfing activities, despite the cooler waters.”

This year, with the greater numbers allowed as Covid restrictions ease, it is hoped that more visitors to the Scallop Fiesta flows on to more people joining in for the swim.

Mr Coxen said the Brave is an all ages event and so, unlike Dark Mofo’s Solstice Swim in Hobart, participants do need to wear bathers.

“We had lots of kids swim last year and they got a real buzz out of being involved.

“We want to continue to encourage families to come along and jump in together, so our focus will remain on creating a family friendly environment.”

Anyone keen to join the fun should keep an eye on the Bridport Brave Facebook page for more details in the coming months.
