Known for her selfless work on many platforms throughout the community, Vicki Forsyth was honoured with a special life membership award on Saturday night for her twenty-three years (and counting) volunteer work for New Horizons.

The Scottsdale based branch for disability and recreation activities has been a hub for learning, friendship and skills since Vicki and her team commenced in 1996.

Based at the Scottsdale Stadium the group offers a weekly Monday afternoon session developing growth in fine motor skills across all sports.

“We currently have 23 community members on the books ranging in age from six to 74-years-old; the team of people that work with me, especially Pat Young and others from the community are so great. It’s very rewarding,” Coordinator Vicki said.

The annual awards evening was held at the Tailrace Centre honouring athletes who competed throughout the year and the many volunteers who give up their time.

It was here that Vicki was presented with life membership for her outstanding service and commitment to New Horizons.

“I was in total shock, I had absolutely no idea I was getting an award – I can’t believe no-one let it slip,” she laughed.

“For me personally it means so much but I’m only a small part of what we do out here, it’s an achievement on behalf of those in the program and the team.

“I just hope I’ve made a difference to some of their lives.”

And to top the night off, Vicki was surprised by her sisters and two daughters sneaking into the dinner to cheer her on.

“It was overwhelming to see them all there, definitely a night to remember.”

Scottsdale’s New Horizons meet every Monday from 3pm-4.30pm during school terms at the Indoor Stadium. If you’d like to discuss being involved turn up on the night.
