If you’ve ever wanted to see one of the oldest working traditions in action, Dale Lester is hosting a public viewing event with his bullock team this Sunday.

The day is part of the Australian Bullock Festival and is the first time it’s been hosted in Tasmania for more than fifteen years, maybe longer.

Dale Lester invited the community to come along to his place at 31643 Tasman Highway Derby from 10am Sunday.

“I’ll have the team of six bullocks yoked up and will be doing some demonstrations with them, including towing a sledge, a log and other things,” he said.

“I’ll talk about the history of bullocks, what they were used for and the breeding side of things for anyone who is interested in getting their own team together.

“I’ve got two young calves which are unbroken, so I plan to yoke them up for the first time for people to see where you start off.”

Mr Lester said in the long term he plans to add the two young calves, Smoker and Major, to the crew and make up a team of eight bullocks alongside Sandy, Rusty, Redman, Graeme, Trevor and Derby.

“There are five teams left in Tasmania dotted around the area. It’s definitely a hobby but it’s enjoyable and people love to see it and ask questions, so we encourage them to do that this Sunday.”

Those heading along must supply their own food and drinks. Entertainment
is free.
