A long-awaited community project has been brought to fruition this week with the installation of high quality cameras and lighting on King Street Scottsdale.
The move was originally initiated by the North-East Chamber of Commerce but after years of unsuccessfully obtaining community grants the Dorset Council delivered for the group.
Mayor Greg Howard said two high definition cameras had been installed on the town clock pointing in either directions of the street along with a large light for night vision.
“One points East to Lords Hotel and the other points West covering the main area of the shopping centre; it’s high enough quality to be able to recognise people's faces and number plates,” he said.
“A third camera is to be installed to cover the southern end of Victoria Street with the exact location currently being negotiated.”
The total cost of the project is $17,500 with all footage being relayed to the Council offices where Police have ready access if required.
“Council has enough space on our server to keep for a substantial time.
“In the past private cameras in Bridport and Scottsdale have been invaluable in tracking vehicles and number plates of offenders in the North-East and the new cameras add a further level of security for community peace of mind.”
Public cameras are also located on the top of the Bridport Pavilion, on the Bridport Hall, one looking at the Brid River Bridge, another opposite the Bridport IGA and one on the Derby Town Hall.
It’s expected over the coming six months all footage from these cameras will be streamlined to Council’s offices after they undergo technology upgrades.
