Derby resident Loz Stranger cut off her long signature hair before a bustling, bidding crowd at the Dorset Hotel on October 25, raising almost $4,000 for the Alopecia Foundation.
She divided her hair into six plaits which were each auctioned off in the bar by Justin Wiggins.
The highest bid was received for the last plait coming in at $500.
An auction and raffle on the night raised $1,622 towards her fundraising total of $3,900.
Loz said she was inspired to raise funds and awareness for the Alopecia Foundation after a friend’s sister recently experienced alopecia.
“I feel like not many people know about it and it’s interesting the amount of people that have been asking me what it is since we’ve did this,” she said.
“This was really about trying to make people more aware of the condition.
“Auctioning off the plaits was Brook and Sean’s [from the Dorset Hotel] idea and that made it really fun and bought a lot of interest.
There were around 50 people crowded into the Dorset Hotel to watch the auction, including locals and tourists passing through town.
Local resident and hairdresser Anastasia Jones was on hand helping with the big chop, along with several other untrained hands.
Loz said she was grateful for everyone who helped put the night on and for the generous donors who helped her reach the impressive fundraising total.
