More funding is flowing to Dorset after the confirmation that Council was successful in obtaining five more grants for projects across the municipality.

Mayor Greg Howard said the council applied through the federal stream, Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program late last year.

Big ticket item includes $700,000 towards the reconstruction of Victoria Street in Scottsdale, a project which is expected to be in excess of $1 million.

The redevelopment will continue from shop to shop and include new footpaths, install storm water, replace water piping, new pavement, landscaping, street lighting and a slight extension to bus depot area to meet regulations.

“We are using a new product for the pavers with maximum grip,” Mayor Howard said.

Bridport’s Vaughn Cain of Cain Civil Contracting was awarded the tender and has already employed two new local staff to help deliver the project later this year.

“It’s pleasing to see a local contractor win the tender.

“He’s previously undertaken work for Council and private enterprise and we are extremely pleased with what we’ve seen at this point in time.

“He also uses other local contractors wherever possible too,” he added.

Other successful grants included $400,000 towards safety improvements for Cascade Dam Road, Derby, $100,000 towards restoration of Scottsdale Railway Station, $130,00 to Bridport CWA carpark extension and $172,336 towards Derby car park redevelopment.

Mayor Greg Howard said commencement on these projects will depend on the availability of contractors and staff.

Federal member for Bass Bridget Archer said not only will these investments create and support jobs, they will build the infrastructure for the future that our community needs.

“Importantly, these projects will improve safety and provide better community facilities.

“This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across the country, supporting jobs and resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.
