Fiesta fun in the Bridport sun
The eighth iteration of the Tassie Scallop Fiesta at Bridport saw the largest crowd in the event’s history converge on the Village Green on Sunday.
From scallop kebabs to seafood paella, all manner of seafood delights were washed down with fine Tasmanian beer, wine, spirits and juice by the 3000-strong attendees.
Event Director Tony Scott said it was a great occasion.
“The weather was really good and we actually had people come and stay for a really long time during the day rather than just coming and going quickly,” Mr Scott said.
“We are happy it is not just another festival, it truly is a fiesta.
“We are really proud of the fact we have all the information stalls among the wonderful food and drink and we had really great responses from the AMC and Bass and Flinders Centre who were there for the first time.”
Mr Scott said people had come from across Tasmania, with many interstate visitors and even a few from overseas, such was the popularity of the event.
“We really want to build on that in the years to come,” Mr Scott said.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff officially opened the day, highlighting the importance of scallops to the local economy.
“Every scallop split here in Bridport adds value, creates jobs, and supports local communities, from the deck to the dinner plate,” Mr Rockliff said.
“Our Government has continued to invest in important regional events right around Tasmania, with $77,000 being delivered to support the Scallop Fiesta from 2025-2027.
“To Festival Director Tony Scott, and each and every volunteer who put their hand up to help out, I thank you for hard work and commitment in bringing people together to celebrate a special part of Tasmania’s way of life.”
The Fiesta also included a number of fringe events.
On Saturday afternoon, dozens of people flocked to the river boat ramp to watch a flotilla of jet skis make a stylish entrance, before 80 people dressed in bows and blunnies dined in the large igloo-style marquees erected for the occasion on Saturday evening
Mr Scott said he hoped to attract some new volunteers to the committee for next year to continue to grow the event.
