With seven sports in his repertoire, it’s not often you see Deagen Young without a ball at his fingertips.
Between football, hockey, squash, mixed netball, basketball, cricket, and golf, Young has plenty of options to choose from.
While he loves participating in all of the competitive activities, and includes motorbike riding and daily gym sessions in his program, it’s footy that has the heart of the talented sportsman.
The Scottsdale 16-year-old was named runner up in the NTFA Division 1 under 16 competition this season, an achievement he highlights as his biggest success since picking up a footy when he was old enough to walk.
“It was a bit of a surprise to come runner up but I’m very grateful,” the Grade 10 Scottsdale High School student said.
“I just love playing. I started Auskick when I was six, then played for the Scottsdale Crows until 2017 when I moved to the Magpies.
“My grandfather Patrick Simmons was a founding member of the Scottsdale Crows and then played for the Winnaleah Magpies. My dad Johnny played for the Scottsdale Crows, he played in five finals and didn’t win one.” Young is hoping his on-field fate will be filled with a little more success as he plans to mix footy with an apprenticeship when he leaves school at the end of the year.
But the midfielder, who will progress to under 18s and is likely to be selected for some seniors games, is under no illusion as to how tough that might be given Scottsdale’s move into the NTFA Premier Division alongside the likes of
TSL clubs North Launceston and Launceston.
“I played my first senior footy game this year which was great even though we lost by 100 plus points,” he said.
“I hope to achieve a successful year for the club while also gaining more skill and knowledge from the older boys.
“It will be an awesome opportunity to play against some talented footballers who I can learn and grow from.
“It would also be good to one day play for the Tassie Devils.”
So, what does he love about playing so much sport?
“The social scene and playing with all my mates,” he said.
“I am super grateful to be supported by the Scottsdale community who have given me lots of opportunities.”
