Wheels are now turning on the new Branxholm to Derby 8km link trail with works officially completed.
The first of its kind for Blue Derby, the two-directional trail will travel through spectacular countryside, a man fern forest and around the old Derby mine hole giving riders an experience like no other.
Federal Member for Bass Bridget Archer said the $400,000 project will benefit local businesses, community members and mountain bike enthusiasts.
“In addition to expanding opportunities to re-engage young people through mountain biking as a sport and an industry, this investment will also produce long-term economic benefits to the region,” Mrs Archer said.
“There is something for everyone with great options for families and people of all abilities.
“We hope to see the same growth that we’ve seen in Derby to further the vibrancy across these North-East communities.
At the opening Mayor Greg Howard said linking the two towns via the trail will enable the Branxholm community to capitalise on economic benefits.
“Branxholm has quite a bit of product with many eateries and accommodation places; Council have also just spent $50,000 heating the swimming pool too – all things that will benefit families,” he said.
“This is the first two-way trail, all other trails that we have are single way.
“It crosses over the main highway halfway between the Derby Back Road turnoff and the entry into Derby township.
“Where the crossing is there are really good site lines both sides and great signage, people just need to be careful.
“Works crews have created chicanes on the edge of the highway to slow the speed of bikes for added safety too,” he said.
This project received $200,000 under the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund with the Dorset Council providing the remaining $200,000 towards the project.
