Scottsdale-born Reid Mountney has been living in Melbourne since 2014, when he left the North-East to begin studying osteopathy at Victoria University.
Reid is in his final semester with just one exam left before he graduates, after which he plans to move back to his hometown.
“At the moment I am still studying full time so I am not working, but when I graduate I will be moving back to start work with the great crew at Dynamic Osteopathy in Scottsdale,” he said.
Reid said he has been passionate about health and medicine and was attracted to osteopathy because he wanted to help others.
“Being an osteopath is a great profession for many reasons: it is flexible, changes day to day, and most importantly it is challenging,” he said.
“Put simply, osteopathy is a set of principles, or a way of thinking, in which you look at the health and wellbeing of a person.
“Most people probably know that osteopaths use their hands as their tools of the trade, but they may support some people in many other ways too.
“I wanted a profession where I could lend a hand somehow. I think osteopathy really allows me to do that.”
Reid recently spent four weeks on an exchange in London, studying and treating at the University College of Osteopathy as part of a scholarship he received.
He spent the month treating patients with HIV, expectant mothers and GP clinics, which he said was an invaluable experience.
When asked where he would like to be in five years, he said the options are endless.
“One great part of osteopathy is that you can take it almost anywhere,” Reid said.
“I could go to Noosa where my sister lives, move to London where I just completed a four-week exchange, or I may just stay here in Tassie.
“Right now I am just concentrating on graduating, starting work and (fingers-crossed) becoming a decent osteopath.”
