Celebrating a life together some aren’t lucky enough to live, Greg and Phyllis Baker say their secret to celebrating seventy years happily married is being able to give and take.
The pair wed on November 19, 1949 in Devonport just after World War Two and had two children together, Lyn Commane and Jeff Baker.
Greg, now 90 years old, and Phyllis, 89-years-old, say they’ve had a very good life.
“Our children are our greatest achievement. We’ve lived and worked all over the place.
“Greg was a panel beater, worked in a retirement home and was the first caretaker of the East Devonport Caravan Park.”
Daughter Lyn has many memories from their years as a family running the park.
“I was just a kid, but I’d come home from school and there would be people like Slim Dusty playing in our loungeroom, things like that,” she said.
“Dad was involved in the horse hunting clubs and together they partied a fair bit after those, it was a good life.”
Twenty-five years ago the pair made the move to Bridport, looking for a nice place to grow old together.
And that they did, enjoying the seaside town, family and a slower paced life.
Only in the past year have the Bakers made the move to Aminya.
“We love living up here, it’s been great,” Phyllis said.
The pair celebrated their platinum anniversary with a family lunch at the Bunker Club on Sunday and a gourmet morning tea at Aminya on Tuesday.
The couple have two children, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Looking back on their life Greg said a word of advice for the young chaps of today,
“Make sure that your wife is always right and you’re always wrong,” he chuckled.
Congratulations to you both, what a gorgeous couple!
