Launching as a new outdoor event as a part of the Tassie Scallop Fiesta, the Bridport Brave Winter Swim will incorporate a little bit of guts and a whole lot of fun.

Participants will be encouraged to strip down to their bathers and brave the cold weather (and water) as the sun rises on Sunday August 23.

The winter swim will take place at 6.48am on Gofton's Beach with the Bridport Surf Lifesaving Club providing water safety and event support on the day.

Organiser Ben Coxen said with Dark Mofo not happening this year locals were keen to do a winter swim to get people to the beach and enjoying the water during the typically cooler months.

“We hope there is motivation to try something new, exciting and different – when you come out of the water you feel invigorated – it kickstarts your day,” he said.

“There will be fire pots and a hot breakfast afterwards, it will be a great early morning event.”

Mr Coxen said he expects there will be a number of people just coming to watch which is encouraged.

“This is a free community event; we’d love to see as many people as possible supporting and trying something different. More information will be updated over the coming weeks on our facebook page ‘Bridport Brave Winter Swim’,” Mr Coxen concluded.

In other news, tickets to Tassie Scallop Fiesta have been selling fast since going online last week with a cap on numbers due to Covid-safe compliance.

Locals having trouble or not confident about buying tickets online can be assisted at the Bridport Pavilion on Friday morning July 17.
