Vandalism plagues laundromat

The once 24-hour laundromat on Hedley Street has now been forced to review its opening hours after consistent vandalism has plagued the family owned business.
Locals Cynthia and Murray Summers have owned the business for more than seven years but say in the past 12 months issues have been more frequent.
“Personally, I think people have just lost respect,” Cynthia said.
Just last week the fire extinguisher was let off inside the laundromat, add to that stealing of cleaning equipment, general lack of cleaning, disrespect of signs and vandalism.
“People need to stop dumping their rubbish in the clothes bin, it’s not for their household rubbish or cleaning their car out, there are fifty public bins for that.
“I just ask that people clean the machines out after they use it but too many times people are washing pet blankets with thick hair or filthy work clothes and they are just leaving it dirty for the next person.”
Mrs Summers said given the lack of tourists around at the moment, it must be a selection of locals who are choosing to leave it in that state.
“Don’t get me wrong there are heaps of people who do the right thing which is sad that they have to use the facility in this state or will suffer from the new hours.”
The business currently has four washing machines, two gas dryers and an electric dryer which are all operational plus a public toilet for customers.
“I just ask that people treat it with respect, read the signs and instructions and call me if there is an issue; too many times I’ve gone down there and it's filthy and no-one lets me know.
“If things don’t pick up, the toilets will be the next thing to go.”
Mrs Summers said the new hours have already taken effect with the laundromat now closing at 7pm each night and reopening at 7.30am from Monday to Saturday and 10am Sundays.
