WORK has commenced on the new Bridport Skate Park, north of the playground between the Village Green and the road access to the Bridport Surf Club.

Flatrock Formwork and Concreting have been awarded the tender for the development.

They specialise in skate parks and have previously completed similar projects around the state including in Ulverstone and St Marys.

The build is estimated to cost $435,000, with $350,000 of that covered by external government funding.

It’s expected construction will take around three months, depending on weather conditions and material supply.
Dorset Council director of works and infrastructure Dwaine Griffin said the new concrete skate park will be a big improvement from the current facility that has been there for around 20 years.

“We’ve done lots of maintenance over the past 10 years but it’s pretty clear it’s well past its use by date and this is Rolls-Royce in comparison,” he said.
“It’s a state of the art, big investment skate park.”
Mr Griffin said during the public consultation period they received lots of positive comments from local youth.
The change in location of the existing skate park has been on the agenda since the start of work on the Lions Adventure Playground.

The idea was to reduce the risk to children crossing the busy access to the foreshore and boat ramp, which is between the playground and present skate park.
