Bridport’s Rory Lethborg bagged a beauty, quite literally, winning his first ever fishing competition with three heavy bream fish tipping the scales at 3.75 kg.

The all ages competition was organised by fishermen involved in the Tasmanian Bream Classic Circuit and held at Anson Bay on Saturday.

Competitors were allocated a fishing time between 8am-2pm to secure a three-bag bream limit with the heaviest bag the winner.

The seven-year-old hatched a plan with his dad Andy, heading into deep waters with his trusty 65mm spotted cranka crab lure.

“Rory was beside himself with excitement all week,” Andy said.

“He’s grown up fishing at Anson’s with the family so the area was familiar to him.

“I stood at the front of the boat picking up a few nice fish but spent most of the day netting Rory’s fish and watching him weave his magic.

“He landed six fish for the day with the three fish bag limit tipping the scale at 3.75 kg and he took out the whole event,” Andy said.

One very happy little boy came home with a heap of fresh lures, a new tackle bag, cash and a few beers for dad.

“He was over the moon, nearly speechless.”

Andy said he recommended all families to get out and enjoy the water with their kids.

“It’s something we love doing together and to see Rory find his passion is great to see.”
