Girl Guides from throughout Tasmania will meet in Bridport in October for their annual weekend camp Quambatook.

Bridport Guides’ leader Lyn Commane said it would be a challenge for the local troop to host the camp from October 1 – 4 centred on a tent city on the recreation ground.

Quambatook means place by the water and Mrs Commane said many activities would have a water theme.

“The Tamar sea scouts are bringing some sailing dinghies and we’ll have kayaks and stand up paddleboards for a day on the dam on Nabowla Back Road so we don’t have to rely on tides.

“We’ll also have some nature study on smaller water bodies and a campfire on the foreshore.”

She said this year’s event will mark 110 years of guiding in Tasmania so there would be some historical aspect to the celebrations, and that would extend to an element of making their own fun.

“The community has already been fantastic in offering to organise and run different activities.

“We’ll have some woodworking classes, the CWA will demonstrate and help with sewing and felting crafts and one of the dads is going to lead some bush biking groups.”

A group of guide leaders from throughout the State met in Bridport at the weekend to inspect some of the sites for the various activities.

Organisers expect at least 110 guides to attend – one for each year of the movement in Tasmania.
