If you’ve been driving through the North-East over the past week it's likely you’ve noticed the new gumleaf green coloured signs alerting you to the ‘Northern Forage Drive Journey’.
And like many you’ve probably then asked yourself what they are all about.
The new tourism strategy was launched by the State Government and Visit Northern Tasmania (VNT) earlier this month and is being rolled out in five areas across the state.
The Northern Forage Journey is one of five journeys which will encourage visitors to disperse to regional places across Tasmania.
VNT CEO Chris Griffin explained that Dorset’s Northern Forage spans the length of the ‘top of the island’ from the North-West through to the North-East.
“The launch showcases suggested itineraries have been designed to offer visitors easy ways to connect up different places across the Northern Forage,” he said.
“These itineraries will change and more will be included as visitors and local tourism businesses provide feedback on how the journeys program is going.”
The Northern Forage itinerary starts in Launceston on day one and travels to Bridport, day two is Bridport to Derby, Day three Derby to Weldborough and day four Weldborough to Launceston.
The itineraries recommend places to stop, eat, stay and enjoy all that the North-East has on offer with great tips on what’s be to see and do.
“The Northern Forage is accompanied by the Heartlands journey through the Midlands and Central Highlands, the Western Wilds (West Coast), Southern Edge (South of Hobart) and the very successful Great Eastern Drive,” Mr Griffin said.
“All journeys are currently being promoted to Tasmanian’s by way of ‘road-testing’ the initial program, with a ‘first phase’ of road signage already erected to reassure visitors that they’re following their desired journey.”
In early 2021, the journeys will be promoted inter-state as demand in visitor markets increases.
