New local Editor appointed
The search for a temporary Editor for the North‑Eastern Advertiser ended closer to home than what might have been with the appointment of long-time local and experienced journalist Tony Scott.
It will be something of a case of coming full circle for Mr Scott, who will come out of semi retirement to take on the role to allow for Taylor Clyne to go on maternity leave.
He trained in print journalism as a cadet at The Examiner in Launceston in the dying days of hot lead linotype machines, but spent most of his reporting days at the ABC newsroom in Launceston.
In between times he worked in magazine publishing in Adelaide and London, where he also had a stint at the Daily Mail on the famous Fleet Street, as Rupert Murdoch was muscling in to the British media establishment.
His close involvement with the North-East started more than 27 years ago with establishing farm accommodation business Platypus Park Country Retreat, which wife Gina continues to manage.
"I grew up in a similar community in the North-West of Tasmania and appreciate the importance of a local newspaper," he said.
Apart from his professional interest in regional affairs and news, he has worked as a State Government adviser and after a first "retirement" rejoined the paid workforce with Forestry Tasmania, based in Scottsdale.
"I've got a pretty good handle on issues in the North-East so hopefully the period of my tenure will be seamless so far as Advertiser readers are concerned."
He will be interrupting a second "retirement" of four years during which he's been yardman (unpaid) in the family tourism business between fishing trips.
Mr Scott will be taking control of the reins in late March, baby arrival dependent.
