Mt Cameron centre going solar
August 26, 2020
Work is about to commence on a major upgrade at the Mt Cameron Field Study Centre.
Following grants from the W D Booth Charitable Trust and Tasmanian philanthropist David Warren, the Scottsdale High School outdoor education facility is preparing to install a solar electric system.
Since it was first built in 1975, the Field Study Centre has relied on diesel generators for its electrical supply.
The new system will still have a generator on site but only as a backup to the solar system.
The solar system is being supplied and fitted by Launceston based Mode Electrical with work set down for October.
Before then, with the assistance of local contractors Rex Rainbow and Wayne Johnson, volunteers will move a container on site to house the system and modifications will be made to the roof prior to installation of the solar panels.
Along with the solar hardware, an educational package is to be developed so that visiting students can learn about solar electricity and see first-hand how such a system operates.
“This is the latest in a series of upgrades to be undertaken at the Field Study Centre but is by far the most exciting,” former resident teacher and chair of the Mt Cameron Advisory Board Craig Searle said.
“Mt Cameron is about to become a much more environmentally friendly facility with a state of the art solar electricity system ensuring a better experience for visiting students.”
