Gold mining potential at Warrentinna

London-based mining company Greatland Gold have commenced a new drilling program at Warrentinna exploring gold mining potential in the area.
The current exploration is taking place at the Derby North prospect, which is not an existing mine site, over an area of 100 x 150 metres.
It is understood that considerably more work would be required before the company considered any mining operation.
Greatland Gold CEO Gervaise Heddle said they are hoping to find mineralisation at Warrentinna similar to that of the central Victorian goldfields.
“We are pleased to have commenced a targeted, low-cost drilling program at Warrentinna which aims to provide us with valuable information regarding the style of mineralisation and will assist in evaluating the potential of the project,” he said.
“In particular, the drill core and associated data will be assessed to determine whether the style of mineralisation at Warrentinna is similar to that seen in the central Victorian goldfields, a world-class gold province.”
While there have been some very successful gold mines in the North-East, much of the mining activity occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with relatively little gold mining in recent years.
A spokesperson from Mineral Resources Tasmania said there are no gold mines currently operating in the region but there has been a new wave of interest from companies.
“The recent discovery of high-grade gold at the Fosterville Mine in Victoria, which occurs in very similar rocks, has inspired companies to reconsider exploring for gold in North-East Tasmania, which may lead to new discoveries that progress to mining operations,” the spokesperson said.
“The government encourages exploration for new mineral deposits and is supporting the minerals industry through the Exploration Drilling Grants Initiative – the next round is expected to open in the New Year for applications.”
