Get your reindeer costumes ready, the Scottsdale Recreation Ground is preparing to come to life this Sunday for the annual Rotary Dorset Christmas Celebration.

The free community event is known for drawing hundreds through its gates every year for a day of festive fun, food, games and entertainment.

Co-organiser Alyse Kerr said the gates will open at 11am and the event will run until 2pm.

“We raise funds all throughout the year so we can put on this free family day for our community to enjoy,” she said.

“It’s always a good day and a chance for the kids to come and have fun with their friends before Christmas.”

On the performing front there will be rock and roll dancers, performances from Bee Bop dance studio and belly dancers to entertain attendees.

There will also be crowd favourites including a supersized jumping castle, face painters, laser tag and photos with Santa.

Local food stalls will be there to satisfy your hunger and there’ll be free pony rides for the children.

“If your little one has always dreamt of riding a pony, this is your chance,” Ms Kerr said.

“We will also be conducting Christmas races this year, which I’m sure will be popular.

“This includes a bauble and spoon race, a toss Santa’s boot and a dress up in festive clothes and run,” she said.

This year Karen Rainbow spear-headed a new fundraiser with the Dorset Men’s Shed, where the talented men made more than 90 wooden Christmas trees for the community to decorate and enter in a competition.

She said the Hands on Learning crew had also made a dozen from recycled pallets and the Dorset Community House made another 12 and painted them green.

“The trees from the Men’s Shed have been sold around the community and raised more than $800 all passed on to the Rotary Dorset Christmas Celebration.

“There are prizes totally $150 cash for the best decorated trees thanks to the Scottsdale Shoe Shop.”

Mrs Rainbow said some of the trees will be available on Sunday for people who would like to get busy decorating to be part of the competition.

There won’t be a Christmas parade this year, but people are encouraged to bring their own chair and rugs to make a picnic space on the grass.

The weather is looking perfect for a fun and free family day this Sunday at the Rec.
