Cats and kittens of all ages and colours from the North East Animal Sanctuary Tasmania (NEAST) will be available for adoption at the Scottsdale Veterinary Service this Saturday.

In recent months NEAST has hit capacity with a large number of cats and kittens coming into their care.

The Scottsdale Vets have teamed up with the Sanctuary to host an adoption day in a central location to help rehome some of the felines in their care.

It’s expected there will be around 15 cats and kittens in attendance and possibly a few dogs.

Vet nurse Stacey Taylor there will be cats and kittens of all different colours and temperaments available on the day.

“You can come in and meet them and adopt them on the day,” she said.

“They will be set up in cages out the front so you can look at them pat them, take them into a consult room and meet and greet if one takes your fancy,” she said.

The majority of adoptees will be this season’s kittens, ranging from three months old up to around five or six months old and a small number of older adult cats.

The adoption fee is $280 for kittens, which covers neutering, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments.

Among the adoptees will be Feather who was rescued in February after being hit by a car in Scottsdale and having to have a leg amputated.

NEAST manager Megan Barker said cats are a good option for anyone looking for company who doesn’t necessarily have the time required to walk and care for a dog.

“If you find you self in a position where you want that company but you’re having to leave the house for 20-30 hours a week for work, a cat could be a good option as they’re a lot more independent,” she said.

“A lot of people will say cats are standoffish but that’s not the case. Boy cats are more affectionate that girl cats I find.

“They are so much less maintenance than dogs I find, and a lot cheaper to run.”

There will be a raffle on the day with an animal tracker, flea and worming kits up for grabs, and all proceeds will go back to NEAST.

Adoption Day will be held at the Scottsdale Vet on Saturday May 7 from 10am-1pm.

Appointments are preferred but not necessary and masks are mandatory in the clinic.
