Dog’s day out with new upgrade

Scottsdale is now the hub of all things canine with the construction of a new off leash agility park at the old Scottsdale railway yard.
The fenced space was once just an area for dogs to run free but now thanks to the Scottsdale Lions Club acquiring a $2,000 grant, interactive new equipment has been installed to challenge even the fittest dogs.
Animal Management Officer Wayne Churchill said he was thrilled when members of the Lions Club came to him with the idea.
“It’s the ideal space because its central, fenced and close to the rec grounds,” he said.
“The site used to be the old BP fuel depot; about four years ago Council were struggling to come up with ideas of what to do with it. We decided on an off-leash exercise area because under the Dog Act we had to have a safe space for the community to use.
“In the past few years not much has been done to the space, it’s terrific to see it transformed,” Mr Churchill said.
The variety of obstacles include ramps, tyres, multi-level platforms and weaving poles all to help challenge your dog’s mind and body.
Involving your dog in agility will help to strengthen their muscles, improve coordination, keep them fit, and increase endurance.
“It’s a great way to get rid of some excess energy too.”
Works are still ongoing with the inclusion of more seating, an undercover area for owners and water troughs for dogs.
“We are planning to have a community open day when everything finished and invite some dog trainers out to run skills and fun activities.
“I’d really like to see a barbeque area installed there in the future too,” Mr Churchill added.
Those using the park are advised that works are still ongoing, weather permitting, and to please pick up after your pooch for the benefit of all users.
