Two years after the Derby depot debacle, Dorset Council has gained access to their new site and with it comes the commencement of the highly anticipated redevelopment of the existing one adjacent to the pump track.

The three-acre block is undergoing a $820,000 remodel which will include an 85-space car park, amenities block, shade sails, seating, landscaping and more.

Mayor Greg Howard said of that figure $795,000 is funded by various state and federal grants.

“The balance to Council will just be $25,000 which is a really great outcome,” he said.

Mayor Howard said Council got the official green light from Mineral Resources Tasmania on Friday July 29 to access the new depot site and crews started moving in on August 1.

“Crews have already started to dismantle the old depot which will be relocated to the Scottsdale depot to house Council machinery.

“We are expecting to officially start the redevelopment opposite the trail head in early November and hope to have it finished by the end of March in time for the Enduro World Series in April,” he said.

It’s understood there is a slight hold up with TasNetworks and the new power supply required on site for lights in the carpark area.

“The new toilets and showers have already been installed. “The only remaining impediment to completely clear the area is the Derby Fire Station however we are currently in negotiations with the state government to find a more suitable site which could potentially house a fire station and ambulance,” Mayor Howard said.

This is likely to be based somewhere around the Valley Ponds halfway between Branxholm and Derby.

“The practicality of having the fire station located in such a high trafficked area now is ridiculous. If someone parked in the way it could cause a serious issue.”

The plans showcase extra features for the site including a new bike wash wall, grassed and landscaped camping areas, bike racks, disability parking and pedestrian crossings.
