Safety reminders to pedestrians on Bridport’s Main Street have been updated in recent weeks as the busy summer tourist season edges closer.
Due to the white stripes on the edges of the hump at the bottom of Henry Street, it’s commonly confused as a pedestrian crossing.
The previous caution ‘pedestrians give way to traffic’ has been replaced by ‘look out before you step out’.
This appears at the edge of the road when crossing Henry Street and when crossing from the strip of shops across to the Village Green.
Dorset Council director of works and infrastructure Dwaine Griffin said new wording and signage has been installed to ease confusion for all road users.
“There’s been some concerns raised by councillors and residents over the hump.
Councillors received feedback that there was confusion and we sought to clarify it,” he said.
“We sought advice on some options for the hump. They were taken to a Councillor workshop and it was decided we’d change the wording and put signs up at either end of town to alleviate confusion and make it clearer for all road users.”
New pedestrian signs have been installed at either end of the main strip of shops, one near each round about, alerting drivers to be aware of pedestrians crossing.
Mr Griffin said while it has been some time in the making, Council is pleased that it is ready for summer.
“It’s timely that it’s now – we wanted it done before the busy season,” he concluded.
