Bridport’s Alfie Wadley will soon be sporting a new ‘do when he cuts his signature long locks in a few weeks’ time.
It’s been more than two years since the 11-year-old last had a haircut.
Alfie said he started thinking about donating his hair for a wig when a family member was battling cancer.
“I started thinking about it around 18 months ago when Aunty Shae started getting a bit sick and started losing hair because she was having chemo,” he said.
In several weeks time, he will have his hair cut, with the donated centimetres given to Variety’s Hair with Heart initiative, turning donated hair into wigs for children who have lost hair due to a medical condition.
Wigs can cost families up to $6,000, lasting between one to two years, meaning families can spend tens of thousands of dollars on the purchase of wigs throughout a child’s youth.
Alfie said he’s excited to be able to help children who are unwell and in need of a wig.
“I think it’s pretty cool. It’s amazing that your hair can be turned into a wig,” he said.
“I think the hairdresser will tie it in a pony tail and split it into three or four sections then cut it and make it into a wig.”
They started fundraising around two weeks ago and since then, they have raised just over $600.
“Mum set a goal of $500 to start with but I’m hoping for $750,” he said.
Donations to Variety can help provide a wig or other vital equipment to children in need.
